Flipped classroom approach is a practice where students are expected to study the topics through the sources provided by their teachers before the actual lesson. With this approach, students come to the classroom with pre-existing knowledge which gives them the opportunity to participate in various practices with their peers and teachers. The advantage of this approach is that because students come to the classroom prepared, it increases the active practice time extraordinarily. For example, in countries where English is not common in the daily life, it is a huge opportunity for students to practice their English. For the negatives, some students may have difficulties whilst learning beforehand due to various reasons like internet access. Even worse, some of them might lack responsibility to study before the lesson time, so unfortunately it is almost guaranteed that there will be some students who will attend the classroom unprepared for the lesson.
This week me and my 3 friends (Özgür Fidan, Tufan Gürültü, Zeynep Yeşildağ) were given a task which we needed to design a lesson with the flipped classroom approach. We created a video using Canva and Capcut then shared it on YouTube for our students to study “Simple Present Tense” before they come to the lesson. Along with the video we also designed an in-class activity and a quiz about “Simple Present Tense” to perform during the lecture time. We used Wordwall in the preparation of in-class activity and quiz. You can accsess the quiz via the QR code at the end of the video. It went quite smoothly; we didn’t encounter a lot of problems. We equally distributed the work and made sure to have fun.
Links below contain the tools we used during the process, our video and lesson plan.
Lesson Plan edit Based on the feedback we received from our teacher; we made slight changes within the video. We paid more attention to capitalization, underlined the suffix usages to attract attention to them, and added a couple of more visuals to make our video more engaging and clearer to our students. Here is the improved version of our video, enjoy!
