Preparing a Worksheet With Technology: Corpus and AI

Hello everyone! This week, we dove into an exiting project for our Current Issues in Teaching class. We were asked to create teaching materials utilizing Corpus and Artificial Intelligence.

I don’t want to bore you folks much so I will explain our process in a nutshell. Me and my two friends decided to design a worksheet with the aim of helping learners practice “since” and “for” using the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and AI tools. We also developed a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model. Speaking for myself, I found it really creative to modernize traditional worksheet activity using today’s technology.

I would like to explain our worksheet very briefly. Our worksheet includes different tasks. At first our learners are asked to complete a “fill in the gaps” activity. Then they are guided into Corpus for quick research about collocations. This research helps them with the following activities. They also have a task which they are asked to find the wrong use of “since” and “for” and fix them. For the last practice, our students are required to construct sentences using “since” and “for” than use AI of their preference to check their grammatical performance and improve it.

We used Canva for the visual design of the worksheet and the integration of AI tools together with COCA. Although I believe that our worksheet is thoroughly put together, sometimes things may not go as planned due to unwanted imperfections. In this case, we have limited class time to complete all the activities and give feedback to our learners. Our students are required to use COCA and due to its complex interface and frequent crashes, it might take more time than expected to fully integrate it into the classroom. Considering the limited time I just mentioned, these problems might prevent our activity from being as productive as we wish to. And finally, as instructors we should check AI’s responses to our learners and make sure that our learners are not exposed to misguidance.

Hello again my dear friends! It's been a week now and I am back with the revised version of our worksheet. Last week we got the chance of receiving our teachers' precious feedback. The feedback was more about the structure of the worksheet instead of its context. She said that we needed to make shorter explanations for the activities and warned us about some design issues caused by usage of inappropriate colors. So, we spent some time fixing those flaws and making our worksheet better than before. With that said, I would like to present to you folks the final version of our worksheet.
